Titans volleyball sees mixed results in opening week

“I saw a lot of progression from our first match of the season”

With players still coming from their hockey and basketball seasons, the Crested Butte Titans volleyball team had quite an erratic start to their 2021 season. Nevertheless, they still rattled off one win out of the first four matches while battling tough against some larger programs.
The Titans started things off on the road against Custer County Bobcats. While they dropped the first two sets, they gave the Bobcats a run in the third set before dropping that as well to lose the match.

“They played hard and had some really great moments but I think there were a lot of first game jitters,” says coach Cierra Abbott.
Three days later the Titans headed into the San Juan Mountains to face the Ouray Trojans building off the lessons learned in their first match of the season. Despite still missing some players, the Titans pulled together to put a more consistent game on the floor winning three of four sets to take the match.

“It was a great match and great to get our first win of the season,” says Abbott. “We were still missing some players but the win showed the potential the team has.”

The following day on Saturday, March 17, Crested Butte remained in the valley to play in the Gunnison tournament taking the floor against some larger programs. They opened the day falling to Salida 2-0 and then lost their second match of the day to Norwood 2-0. Sami Lakoski led the team in kills and passing percentage and Abbott was far from discouraged by what she saw.

“We played really hard and stayed on both teams the entire time,” says Abbott. “I was really proud with how the girls played in both of those matches. I saw a lot of progression from our first match of the season. There were a lot of really good things and a lot of quick learning.”
The frantic pace of the volleyball season continues this week as the Titans have three more matches including their first home match of the season on Friday, March 26.

“We play Sanford on Friday and they’re one of the top teams in our league,” says Abbott. “It’s great to be able to play one of the top competitors early in the season.”

Crested Butte then hits the road on Saturday, March 27 to face the Center Vikings.

“We should be pretty evenly matched in that one,” says Abbott. “I have a lot of confidence going in.”
