Play at home Friday

The Crested Butte Titans volleyball team dropped both matches last week losing to Monte Vista on Tuesday, September 21 at home and then falling to Telluride on the road on Friday, September 24.

Monte Vista set the tone in the first set winning 25-12 and carried that into the second set to hand the Titans a 25-16 loss. Crested Butte proved resilient and rather than just fold and give up the third set, they picked up their game only to fall in the final set 25-19 and lose the match.

“Monte Vista came out much stronger than we did,” says coach Cierra Abbott. “We tried to come back but it was too late. We fought hard regardless.”

The Titans then headed to Telluride to face the Miners Friday and play in front of their homecoming crowd. Telluride has some big hitters that took down the Titans in their first match of the season and appeared to have additional firepower in their meeting Friday while Crested Butte’s line up was depleted.

“We were missing a few key players and Telluride had a few new players we hadn’t seen before,” says Abbott.

The Miners came out swinging and never let up to cruise to a straight set victory but not without some fight from the Titans that were there.

“My defense stepped up and had a phenomenal game,” says Abbott. “They worked hard to get behind the ball and played extremely well against a team who swings very heavy. I think the team had a lot of fun playing Friday. It’s always rewarding playing a good team and making great plays.”

The Titans return home this week to host Del Norte on Friday, October 1 at 5 p.m. in mighty Mt. Olympus. They get back on the road Saturday for matches in Creede.
