The Crested Butte Titans boys basketball team is now sitting at the top of the league standings with a record of 3-0 after cruising to a couple of wins over Sargent and Trinidad last weekend. Their next big test of league play comes on Friday, February 3 when they host the second place Sanford Indians, tip-off at 7 p.m.

The Titans headed to Sargent on Friday, January 27 for their second league game of the season. Sargent has been a strong program for years, but the Titans have been chipping away at their dominance and after edging out an overtime win in the 2019-2020 season, the Titans haven’t looked back winning every showdown since and continued that dominance on Friday rolling to a 60-42 win.

The Titans came back to mighty Mt. Olympus on Saturday, January 28 to host the Trinidad Miners. Crested Butte continued their winning effort against the Miners paced by an explosive first quarter.

Jacob Bernholtz opened the game with a three-pointer and the Titans went immediately to a press to turn up the heat on Trinidad early. Kason Cox drained a 12-foot jumper and Ben Barney finished off a three-point play and the Titans were firing.

A couple of three-pointers from Trinidad helped pull them back into the game but only briefly as Crested Butte opened the game with a 14-3 run. A Cox steal and basket off the press started things off followed by an offensive rebound and bucket from Riley Davis. Weston Miller followed suit with an offensive board and basket, Eli Hulm dropped a three-pointer and when Jamis Matlock hit two of three free throws at the end of the quarter, the Titans were sitting on a comfortable 27-9 lead.

Crested Butte stayed on the throttle in the second quarter to keep pulling further and further away from Trinidad opening the quarter with a 17-0 run. Barney started it off spinning to the hoop for two, Davis hit another three-pointer for the Titans and Davis ran the length of the court for a layup. Porter Donahue came off the bench to score four points off free throws and inside the paint and Cox and Barney capped the massive run with baskets.

The game turned a little more even in the second half as coaches looked to the bench to get players varsity time and Crested Butte eventually outscored the Miners 11-5 in the fourth quarter for the 70-31 win.

The Titans headed to Ouray this week and then return home for league play when they host the Sanford Indians on Friday, February 3 at 7 p.m. It’s also the Titans Booster Club Family Fun Night with one fan picked from the crowd for a shot, three shots actually, at $100 in cold… hard… cash.
