CBAC ramping up for the season

Awareness Night and Beacon Brush Up this weekend

By Than Acuff

There’s snow in the hills and people are getting amongst it, and the Crested Butte Avalanche Center (CBAC) is putting out their daily avalanche and weather bulletins. Good thing too because it’s a bit spicy out there in spots.

The CBAC would not be possible without the support of the community, and they are inviting everyone to join them this weekend for their two big events of the season.

The weekend kicks off Friday, December 1 with their major fundraiser of the year, Avalanche Awareness Night, at the Center for the Arts. Doors open at 5 p.m. and presentations start at 6 p.m. including, as always, an amazing raffle. It’s $10 to get in, $5 if you have a CBAC membership.

Can’t make it but still want to support the CBAC? There is an Early Bird Raffle going on right now with a new Ortovox Litric airbag pack, a Mammut beacon and an Ooni pizza oven from Chopwood Mercantile up for grabs. Raffle tickets are available under the donate tab on the CBAC website, cbavalanchecenter.org, and you do not need to be present at Awareness Night to win in the Early Bird Raffle.

On Saturday, December 2 the CBAC is hosting the annual Beacon Brush Up behind the CBCS from 9 a.m.–2 p.m. There will be valuable instruction from beginners to experienced backcountry travelers available from avalanche professionals and guides. Best of all, it’s free.

Looking ahead, the CBAC is having its annual Holiday Tree Sale Friday through Sunday, December 8–10 by Ace Hardware. Sales Friday and Saturday are from noon–7 p.m. and Sunday, if any are left, starting at noon.
