500-square-foot mobile homes on northwest side of CB

There is an upcoming effort to experiment with a tiny home village in Crested Butte.
Partnering with the Valley Housing Fund, the Crested Butte Town Council will hold a special council meeting on Monday, December 9 to consider allowing greater density in the mobile home park. With five small mobile homes on the three lots where two trailers and a garage are currently situated, a tiny home cluster could be used as workforce rentals.
The Valley Housing Fund has the old Paul Redden property under contract, with the idea to place five 500-square-foot, one-bedroom mobile homes on the site. The units would be under the auspices of the Valley Housing Fund and offered to locals as rentals.
Council will look at the concept before passing it along for a review by the Board of Zoning and Architectural Review (BOZAR). While the initial site plan meets the zoning standards and provides two parking spaces, a storage shed for each unit along with snow storage, the town wants feedback on the concept from neighbors.
In a letter delivered to neighbors this week, the town and Valley Housing Fund wrote, “The proposed mobile homes are very much in line with tiny homes seen around other communities. These units will offer one- or two-person households with their own living space, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. The Town and Gunnison Valley Housing Fund are excited to explore this opportunity to provide desperately needed rental housing to locals and employees of the Gunnison Valley.”
The Valley Housing Fund has the property under contract for $500,000. To remove the current two trailers and garage on the property and prepare the site for the tiny homes will end up with the project estimated to cost about $1 million. Town is looking at purchasing one of the units, as are some other public entities, due to the relatively inexpensive cost of the rentals.
The council meeting will begin Monday at 6 p.m.
