More solar to be allowed
By Mark Reaman
The Crested Butte Town Council on Monday, July 20 approved changes to the Board of Zoning and Architectural Review (BOZAR) design standards and guidelines. It has been more than a decade since the document had been updated with any significant change and while nothing major was shifted, the standards will better reflect the current period and, for example, allow for more solar to be included in building projects.
Members of the town planning department went over the changes in an hour-long work session before the council meeting. Molly Minneman, Jessie Earley and Troy Russ all emphasized the importance of the BOZAR guidelines to the council. Minneman said the new amendments would basically do things like better incorporate the town’s Climate Action Plan into the building process and make the process easier and have less grey areas in the official document.
“But the philosophy will remain the same,” said Early of protecting the historical integrity of Crested Butte’s built environment.
The process of updating the BOZAR standards included many meetings, time with the town attorney and the solicitation of public input. “There will be allowances for things like solar panels but overall I don’t see any profound changes with this update,” said Earley. “There is a lot of clarification.”
With no comment from the public to the Town Council, the council approved the changes unanimously.
