Kickers looking to defend home turf
Believe it or not, Crested Butte will host the 18th annual adult coed soccer tournament Saturday and Sunday, June 30-July 1. The tournament this year promises to be better than ever, with seven teams from around the state coming to vie for the coveted Crested Butte tournament title. The list includes a couple of up and coming squads out of Boulder, Grand Junction, Winter Park, and Telluride and a select coed squad from the Front Range.
Games will go on all day Saturday at both Rainbow and the Community School fields. The Crested Butte Kickers will play at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Rainbow and high noon at the school field on Saturday.
The semi-finals will be Sunday morning, with the tournament finals at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday at the community school field.
This year’s Kickers team is a blend of both old and new talent with a couple rookies added to the team to bring in speed and intensity, while the old guard will be there to help maintain composure.
“I’m really excited about the team this year,” says player Drew Canale. “It’s a good mix of new players and veterans with a strong ladies core.”
With such a strong contingent of teams from around the state lined up this year for the tournament, Canale believes one aspect of the Crested Butte game needs to be spot-on.
“The key to success for this year’s Kickers team is pinpoint passing,” says Canale.
