Somerset man arrested in connection with death of child
After Sheriff Rick Murdie stood in front of a public meeting last week and said the residents of Gunnison County would be shocked to hear what kind of criminal is coming to the Gunnison County Jail, people wondered what he meant. Now they know.

The jail is now home to Edward Geavanni Cox, who was arrested Monday, May 3 for first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death (a class 2 felony) in connection with the April 17 homicide of 13-month-old Christian Wentz.
According to a press release from the Gunnison County Sheriff, Cox was arrested in Somerset “after an extensive investigation involving the Gunnison Sheriff’s office, Gunnison County Coroners Office, Delta County Sheriff’s Office, Paonia Police Dept. and the 7th Judicial District Attorney’s office.”
The suspect is being held on a no bond warrant at the Gunnison County Jail, but information is limited since the court ordered that the arrest affidavit be sealed at the request of the District Attorney.
“Mr. Cox is scheduled for Court on May 11th; however a hearing will be held in regard to advisement of rights prior to that time,” the release says.

Special District election results: Dietrich, Maltby, Sale and Eleeson elected
Two local special districts held elections on Tuesday, May 4 and both will seat two new board members. The Crested Butte Fire Protection District and the Mt. Crested Butte Water and Sanitation District both conducted elections.
In the Fire District, 125 voters showed up, and Jack Dietrich garnered the most votes with 92. Trevor Maltby came in second with 67, while Sean Riley came in third with 64. District manager Mike Miller said given the closeness of the votes for Maltby and Riley, a recount was held with the same result—so Dietrich and Maltby will take the board seats.
At the Water and Sanitation District, 58 ballots were cast, resulting in a tie: both John Sale and David Eleeson tallied 39 votes and will join the board. Carlos Velado came in third with 27 votes.
Congratulations to all the candidates.
