Search and Rescue efforts still being made to locate hiker missing since August

Helicopter in the air last week

Backcountry hikers and hunters are being asked to keep an eye out for hiker Sherrie Ahlbrandt, who has been missing in the area since mid-August. Crested Butte Search and Rescue president Nicholas Kempin said there are ongoing efforts to locate the hiker despite searchers having come up empty during an intense search that was conducted for several days after Ahlbrandt was reported missing.

In fact a helicopter was used last Thursday and Friday, September 25 and 26 to continue the search. “I think there was a misunderstanding that the search was called off. A better way to describe it would be that it was scaled back,” Kempin explained. “There are still efforts being made to search for her. As of yet, there has been no sign of what happened to her.”
Fifty-four-year-old Sherrie Ahlbrandt was reported missing from the Oh Be Joyful/Daisy Pass area on August 13. She is 5-feet 2-inches tall and has black hair. Ahlbrandt was hiking but didn’t return to her Slate River Road camp. She was carrying both a black jacket and a yellow jacket, along with a couple of water bottles and a map. The extensive aspect of the search was conducted through August 16.
If you find evidence of Ahlbrandt’s location, contact the Mt. Crested Butte police department at 349-6516.
