Nonprofits will have more strict rules to follow when asking for money
The Town Council is intent on making definite changes to the way it doles out money to non-profit organizations. They want to combine the Service Grants with the Venture Fund and tighten up the application rules. Two grant cycles per year will be utilized to consider requests for town money. “The purpose is to make this a more structured process so we can make good, fair decisions,” commented Mayor Aaron Huckstep.

GOATS get council support for Deadman’s bridge
The council agreed to a request from head GOAT (Gunnison Valley OHV Alliance of Trailriders) Doug Hudson and will write a letter supporting the use of funds to construct a bridge at the Deadman’s Gulch Trailhead. The GOATs have been meeting with foresters about Trail 420 and the hope is to get a bridge in the area. The GOATs have pledged to help raise funds and want to come up with at least half of the expected $60,000 expenditure. “We want every organization in the valley to be a part of this project,” said Hudson.
Big Wheels part of CB’s Pro Challenge
The council approved several special event permits and liquor licenses. Among them were the permits for the USA Pro Cycling Challenge. The bike race will be coming through town on August 21. A party will be held on Monday, August 20 and that will close a section of Elk Avenue. “We hope to get the community psyched with a hype party and do some silly Crested Butte bike events like an adult Big Wheel competition,” explained co-organizer Dave Ochs.
Other than that not much will change, as local organizers hope the race runs as smoothly and as successfully as last year’s inaugural event.

Waste Management overdoing it?
Councilperson Roland Mason wanted to chat about the appropriateness of the large Waste Management decals on the trash receptacles located around town. He said several people thought the decals provided almost a billboard aspect for the company that may not be appropriate for the town. The council will look into the matter further.
