WSCU men’s hoops drop two on road trip

Hope to rebound at home January 4

Western State Colorado University (WSCU) men’s basketball dropped their first conference game of the season Sunday night, December 16. The Mountaineers lost on the road at Adams State by a score of 101-76. The Mountaineers went into halftime down only one point, shooting 47.1 percent in the first half including seven three-point baskets en route to 45 points.
The second half was a completely different story for the men in red. The Mountaineers shot just 33.3 percent from the field and allowed ASU (6-0, 4-0 RMAC) to shoot over 50 percent in the second half. Four Grizzlies scored in double figures but were led by Norvell Arnold’s 19 points. Kaimyn Pruitt scored 14 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to help ASU remain undefeated on the season.

Terrence Boyd (Jr., Vallejo, Calif.) led the game in scoring with 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Travis Shepherd (Sr., Boulder) and Jordan Adams (Jr., Denver) were the other Mountaineers to score in double figures. Both had 11 points.

The Mountaineers then dropped their second game in a row to Ft. Lewis College on Monday night.
The game was neck-and-neck for the entire 40 minutes of play and with 3:10 left to play, the Mountaineers took a three-point lead. Unable to maintain the lead, Fort Lewis College took control of the game and won at home by a score of 73-70.

At halftime both teams were even at 35 points, but Fort Lewis (7-1, 4-1 RMAC) managed three more points than WSCU in the second half. WSCU (5-5, 4-2 RMAC) was plagued by the free-throw bug as the team shot just 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from the charity stripe.
Everywhere else, the Mountaineers had success. WSCU shot 45.2 percent from the field (28-of-62) and recorded nine steals. FLC’s Marcus Ayala led all scorers with 22 points off the bench. His teammate Alex Herrera recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Travis Shepherd (Sr., Boulder) led the Mountaineer scoring attack with 20 points. Shepherd made four three-pointers on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. Terrence Boyd (Jr., Vallejo, Calif.) recorded his third double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Teammate Charles Joseph (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) also recorded a double-double, his fourth of the season after grabbing 12 rebounds and scoring 15 points. Jordan Adams (Jr., Denver) scored two deep three-pointers en route to 10 points. The Mountaineers will have a break over the holidays before facing Colorado School of Mines on January 4 in Gunnison. The men’s game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
