Independence Day celebrations will come a little early this year, with the Mt. Crested Butte fireworks display scheduled for Friday, July 2 on the mountain. Meanwhile the Crested Butte-Mt. Crested Butte Chamber of Commerce is confident that a Fourth of July parade will indeed happen this year on Sunday, July 4.

According to Mt. CB town clerk Tiffany O’Connell, the town’s fireworks distributor dropped July 4, and a contract for fireworks has now been signed for July 2. “The 2nd was the best we could do,” she said.

Fireworks will start after dark, around 9 p.m. There will be no official music or celebrations at the base area, so the fireworks can be enjoyed from anywhere with a good view of the mountain.

The Chamber will be coming to the Crested Butte town council on June 21 to get approval for the annual parade that was in some doubt given COVID-19 restrictions and turnover of Chamber staff. But an email from the Chamber to local businesses and non-profits said that, “The Chamber is excited to share that we are moving forward with the production of the 2021 Crested Butte 4th of July parade, subject to Town Council approval on June 21. With Gunnison County’s recent accomplishment of gaining green status, the Chamber is confident in safely moving forward with the traditional celebration.”

The email indicated that while still in the works, an alternative parade route may be done this year.
