Election will be canceled if no one files as a write-in

Four petitions have been filed by candidates seeking positions on the Mt. Crested Butte Town Council. With four positions open, the election could be canceled unless someone files to run as a write-in candidate.
According to Jill Lindros, town clerk and designated election official, candidates had to acquire ten signatures and return petitions to the Mt. Crested Butte Town Hall by 5 p.m. on January 25 in order to run for council.
Sitting council members Ken Lodovico and Nicholas Kempin both returned petitions, as did Mt. Crested Butte residents Janet Farmer and Bill Thompson. Lodovico and Kempin were both appointed to council in 2015 to fill vacancies.
With only four candidates, it is possible to cancel the election. However, Lindros says Mt. Crested Butte residents and registered voters can file to run as write-in candidates until Monday, February 1. If no one does that, then the election will be canceled.
“There would be a resolution to officially cancel the election and appoint those [candidates] as elected officials,” Lindros said.
In the event that someone runs as a write-in candidate and there is an election, it will be conducted by mail-in ballot. The new council terms begin in April 2016.
