Six throw hat in the ring for Town Council race

Election Day is November 1

There will be an election for Crested Butte Town Council but the ballot won’t be very long.

Two people are vying for mayor, current councilperson and former mayor Jim Schmidt and Aaron Huckstep, one of the primary organizers of the local stage of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge.
On the council side there are three seats open for election. Incumbents Dan Escalante, Reed Betz and Phoebe Wilson all decided not to throw their names back into the election ring. Instead, four citizens will be running for three seats.
Former Board of Zoning and Architectural Review (BOZAR) chairperson Glenn Michel has decided to try his hand at council. Longtime Gunnison County planning commissioner David Owen is also seeking one of the three elected posts. Kevin McGruther and Shaun Matusewicz will round out the ballot.
Four other people picked up petitions but did not return them to the town clerk.
The election is by mail ballot in conjunction with the county. Ballots will be sent to eligible voters October 11-14 and must be returned by November 1.
The Crested Butte News will hold a Candidate’s Forum in mid-October and will also be asking weekly questions of the candidates to get their views and perspectives on local issues starting in October.
