Crested Butte hockey rink boards collapsed

In the hands of insurance

A major accident at the Crested Butte Rink has the town a bit perplexed. On the evening of Monday, March 23, the ice rink boards on the south side collapsed. The accident took down most of the southern boards and splattered glass over the concrete and remaining ice sheet. The rink had been closed for the season. No one was hurt in the incident.

The accident is still under investigation so town staff didn’t have a lot of information. Parks and Recreation director Janna Hansen said it appears the cause of the collapse was a wind event that took place that night.
“We don’t know why the bolts did not support the boards,” Hansen said. “They were professionally reinstalled after the Whatever USA event last fall by Becker Arena Products, who have a lot of experience with that. We are working with Becker and our insurance company to determine how it will be fixed.”
The cost and timing of the repairs have yet to be determined, but Hansen said the town expects the insurance company to handle the costs.
