Paper and plastic out on curb starting in July

Towns to get increased recycling service

The new and improved recycling program for the towns of Crested Butte and Mt. Crested Butte will start the first week of July. Waste Management has been working with the communities to increase the amount of material that can be picked up at the curb.

Crested Butte town manager Susan Parker said an informational letter and sticker to put on the new recycling bins will be sent out this week to Crested Butte residents. The new bins can be picked up at the Waste Management facility in Riverland at the end of June.
Under the new “dual stream” program, two containers per household can be put at the curb. One container can hold commingled aluminum, tin, brown glass and plastics #1 and #2.
The second container can hold bundled newspapers, magazines, and mixed office paper.
Bound cardboard may also be put curbside, no wider than three feet and no higher than three inches. The items will be transported to the Waste Management Grand Junction Facility for sorting and distribution. Clear and green glass recycling remains off limits since there is no end-source user. The program will be the same for both Crested Butte and Mt. Crested Butte.
“It has taken a while to get to this point and it is a good improvement,” Parker said.
There will be no added cost to the town or its residents for the new program.
“We are excited that the program is expanding and making it easier for residents up here to recycle,” said Mt. Crested Butte community development coordinator Theresa Henry, who helped work with Waste Management to upgrade the program.
Waste Management district operational manager Steve Fry said he was excited to be able to improve the program. “This is what the customers said they wanted and we are glad to be able to put a better recycling program in place.”
July 3 is the official start date for the new program in Crested Butte, with Mt. Crested Butte going on-line July 2.
