Head-on in the first snow of the season

A two-vehicle accident on Highway 135 just south of Crested Butte Wednesday morning sent a Crested Butte woman to the Gunnison Valley Hospital after a head-on collision.

Wednesday morning brought several inches of snow to the area and is believed to be a factor in the crash that closed the highway at mile marker 26 for a bit.

According to the Colorado State Patrol the accident occurred at 7:27 a.m. when a Dodge Ram 2500 pick-up truck and a 2000 Ford Explorer collided. The driver of the pick-up, 23-year-old Hannah Cranor of Gunnison was heading north when she apparently lost control on the snow covered road. The truck went into the oncoming southbound lane and struck the Explorer head-on. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

A 30-year-old woman from Crested Butte was driving the Explorer and she was transported to Gunnison Valley Hospital. Authorities did not release her name and did not know the extent of her injuries as of Wednesday afternoon. Cranor declined medical treatment.

The accident occurred north of Riverbend before the hill coming into Crested Butte. Along with the CSP, officers from Crested Butte, Mt. Crested Butte, the county and the Crested Butte Fire Protection District responded to the scene.
