Majestic Theatre back in action September 23

Also showing free Crested Butte Film Festival films

By the end of this month, the Crested Butte Majestic Theatre will be showing movies once again on the silver screen after two years of being closed. Friends of the Majestic has signed a lease and, if all goes according to plan, will host a grand reopening party at the Majestic Theatre on September 23. Then on September 24, the theater will collaborate with the Crested Butte Film Festival for free film screenings and will also be open to the public for new Hollywood movie showings.

“As of today, we’ve raised $243,000, and are still trying to hit the $300,000 goal,” said Friends of the Majestic co-founder and executive director Carrie Wallace. “We’re still working to get all our ducks in a row, but if everything goes to plan, we are going to be open.”

Wallace noted that while the reopening is a big deal, she still has high hopes for the theater’s future. “I don’t consider the Majestic saved until the town or our non-profit owns the building so that we don’t ever have to do this again. But we’ve reached phase one, and opening is a huge step.”

For the reopening party, Wallace said that they’re planning for an evening watching a “grab bag of movies,” socializing and being back in the Majestic again. Then the Majestic Theatre will help host the Crested Butte Film Festival, showing six film screenings free to the public (register in advance) on Saturday, September 24 and Sunday, September 25. To top it off, the Majestic will also begin screening new Hollywood movies on Saturday night. As of now, Wallace is planning for Top Gun: Maverick and Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Wallace reiterated that Friends of the Majestic still needs help getting to the finish line, and the non-profit is still asking for donations and volunteers in the final push. Anyone who donates over $1,000 gets a bronze plaque on a theater seat and will automatically get two VIP tickets to the reopening party. Wallace said that she is also looking for help with little projects around the theater – including deep cleaning, painting, carpentry, electrical and plumbing projects. “We’re trying to help open the Majestic better than ever,” she said.

To go along with a new and improved experience, the Majestic will be renting out its third theater for events, parties and other celebrations. “For people interested in renting our third theater they can email me and get their names on the calendar,” said Wallace, noting they already plan to hold monthly movies with the Trailhead Children’s Museum, speed dating events and
birthday parties. Wallace said they are also working on building out a membership program
for locals to get monthly
and annual discounts and deals.

Tickets for the grand reopening party go on sale to the public on
